A CHARTER ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF ABILENE, KANSAS AMENDING SECTION 9 OF CHARTER ORDINANCE 15, AND SUBSEQUENT AMENDMENTS THERETO, RELATING TO THE NUMBER OF MEMBERS CONSTITUTING THE CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU BOARD.

WHEREAS, the City of Abilene, Kansas ("City") is a city of the second class;

WHEREAS, K.S.A. 12-1696 to 12-16,101 , inclusive, authorizes a levy by cities of a transient guest tax, which provisions are not uniformly applicable to all cities; and

WHEREAS, the City has previously adopted Charter Ordinance No. 15, and subsequent amendments thereto, exempting itself from the provisions of K.S.A. 12-1696 to 12-16,101, inclusive, and to provide substitute and additional provisions as set forth in that charter ordinance and subsequent amendments thereto; and

WHEREAS, the governing body of the City, by virtue of the powers vested in it by Article 12, Section 5, of the Kansas Constitution, desires to amend Section 9 of Charter Ordinance No. 15, and subsequent amendments thereto. SO, NOW THEREFORE

BE IT ORDAINED BY THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF ABILENE, KANSAS:

       Section 1.       Amendment. Section 9 of Charter Ordinance No. 15, and subsequent amendments thereto, relating to the number of members constituting the Convention and Visitor Bureau, is hereby amended to state as follows:

Section 9.       A "Convention and Visitors Bureau" is hereby established to advise the Governing Body and make recommendations concerning programs and expenditures for conventions and tourism. The Bureau will consist of seven members appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Commission. Initially, four members shall be appointed for terms ending on the second Monday of January 2023; two members for terms ending on the second Monday of January 2024; and one member for a term ending on the second Monday of January 2025. Thereafter, at the expiration of terms of the original members, their successors shall be appointed for terms of three years each, commencing on the second Monday in January and each shall serve until a successor is appointed and qualified. Any vacancies in the membership of the Bureau shall be filled by appointment of a new member as in the case of the original appointment, to fill the unexpired term of the member whose office is vacant.
